Can you provide printer-friendly articles?
There is an option at the end of each post that allows you to print the basic article without the navigation and advertisements. And thank you, it is a big compliment to tell me that you are printing out my material.
Can you give me some tips on blogging?
There is a basic article I’ve written here. Experienced bloggers will know most of it, but blogging is usually just a repetition of the basics. Almost everything I have used is in that post.
You mentioned being depressed. How did you snap out of it?
I don’t know. I was so upset, angry, self-hating and miserable for many years. I came out of it naturally a couple of times, and then certain things would trigger a fall back into depression. However, one of these falls was different I thought “Oh no! Oh no! Never again!” and decided I would fight it with all my might. After a few days of being miserable I found the courage to pick up the phone and call a counselor. There’s no shame in seeking professional help, despite the social stigma.
Are you Enlightened / a Guru?
I am truly grateful, honoured and humbled that my readers see me like this. I’m not being sarcastic – I really am honoured. But I am not a teacher or a master, and have never claimed to be one. I am just sharing what I’ve learnt in my own journey. I have my ups and downs, just like everyone else. The only difference is: I am on the other side of the screen.
I have no formal spiritual or religious training. I am a psychology student who found the spiritual path the best to escape his own suffering. Please don’t believe anything I have to say – put it to the test, and decide for yourself.
How did you come up with a name like Urban Monk?
Honestly? Because it sounded cool. I originally wanted to cover urban issues like dating, finances, humour and boxing, together with spiritual topics, and so I came up with many names that conveyed the mix. This one was the best out of my list. It was in a spirit of fun, and I mean no disrespect to any real monks. In fact, it conveys my deep respect to those who have dedicated themselves completely to a spiritual path.
Are you affiliated with Urbanmonk.com, or any other variants?
No. When I created the blog, I spent days agonizing over the name, and in the end I fell in love with Urban Monk title, even though urbanmonk.com was taken. I decided it wasnt a big deal and bought the .net extension, which is something I regret now. There is a lot of confusion and possible lost readers who might type in urbanmonk.com or something.
I have also contacted the owner of urbanmonk.com, hoping to purchase the domain name, but they said they will be using it soon for their own publishing company.
Religion and Spirituality
Despite the name and reputation, UrbanMonk.Net is not a religious or spiritual site, strictly speaking. The site is aimed at everybody, regardless of their beliefs or background. I draw upon a wide variety of traditions in my own journey, but that is all.
What religion do you follow?
I don’t know. I drink from all clear streams, as a reader put it. I was raised as a Christian, but I’m finding the common ground between that and many other traditions like Buddhism, Taoism, and so on. I’m a big fan of non-duality, although I’m not really qualified to write on it as I haven’t experienced it.
Can I link to you?
Yes, please. I would be very grateful.
Linking to me is also one of the ways I find people to link out to in my link love sections at the end of each post. It’s not a guarantee, but it is a good way to get my attention.
